The Experiment

One Night I did an experiment

A Thursday night, to be precise.

Tonight.

I texted eight of my friends.

I waited.

Nothing.

I said to myself, “Huh.

Surely within ninety minutes, they will reply. Some of them.“

I went for a walk.

On the walk, I casually, not casually, thought about the ninety minutes going by.

I felt the steady stillness of the phone in my pocket.

I thought about my life.

I wondered who cared about me.

Nevermind these people being busy for this particular hour and a half!

Tonight is important.

Maybe ‘cuz I’ve had some whiskey —

That can highlight urgency

And despondency.

Accelerate things.

I considered my longing. The long week, almost over. The yearning for understanding.

Release.

Laugher.

Attention.

Being Calm, I said,

“Anita.

I bet three of these people will write you back. Whoever those three are, these are your lifelong friends!

The others? Who knows!

Ignore them for a month! No texting back — make them wonder.”

I then wondered about myself.

I loved this plan.

Definition plus impulsivity. A sure-fire way!

An hour and a half later, two of my friends had texted back.

I decided to make the other six my real friends.
